Maria is a 35-year-old nurse who works in a nursing home. One of her patients is Niels, a young man, paralyzed from the waist down, with a neural disorder that can only get worse and deprives him of any hope and wish to live. Niels has a strong desire to die through assisted suicide in Switzerland. He needs someone to accompany him, for reasons both practical and legal, but his mother and his brother don’t intend to help him to kill himself. Maria decides to go with him.
Since the beginning of the creative process, I have always focused on the perspective of the “partner ” rather than on the person who wishes to die. Before working on the project I wasn’t informed on the issue of assisted suicide and I believed naively that these patients did not love – or even hate – life . However, during my research, I realized that it’s possible at the same time to recognize the beauty of life and to wish for death. In my opinion, this is the interesting aspect of the relationship between Niels, the patient, and his mate, Maria. If he had hated life, it would have been much easier for her. But how do you relate to a person who, on the one hand, recognizes the beauty of life and, on the other hand, rejects it? The intention of the movie is not to propagandize, but I believe and hope that my movie raises many questions and reflections in the viewers.
